Born 1964, Bussum, The Netherlands,
Kwaaitaal was one of the pioneers of the digitally edited photograph. On a paintbox computer she was one of the first to pave the way for what was to be a revolution in photography as an artform. Besides this significant achievement she also founded one of the first veejay collectives. Now an accepted art form, in 1994 it was the first step to bringing video art to a younger public. In later years her work has taken a more autonomous turn, she has taken more freedom to expand her visual language far beyond the rave and partyscene of the 90's.
Kwaaitaail's art always delivers experience first and thought later. Her work does comment or display certain defects or details of society, but her strength lies in the power of the image she creates. Her series 'whispering waters' functions as a comment on the shallowness of most fashion photography and the search for a new female aesthetic. But these submerged woman are first and foremost admired for their sculptural elegance and poetic serenity. She takes away any doubt about the possibility of using a computer for creating very personal, moving images.
