The photographs of Edward Burtynsky document a defining process of our times. They depict the places where raw nature meets the limitless desires of man. The result of this meeting is an industrial deforming of the landscape that seems without boundaries. Even when we would visit these quarries and refineries ourselves, we would not be aware of the scale these photographs so confrontingly show. Almost taking on the qualities of an abstract work, Burtynsky's decade long survey of these industries is not judgemental. While he does try to ignite a dialogue between our needs and the capacity of our planet, he doesn't present his work as a complaint on society.

Besides his work as a fine art photographer he applies himself to create a greater global awareness. As the 2005 winner of the TED price he represents a new kind off artistic engagement, not shy of business or commercialism, but always aware of the payoff of modern desire. His photographs reflect his way of thinking, providing a mirror rather than a fist of anger.
