Born 1965, Veenendaal, the Netherlands,
Hans Broek's career started as an meticulous painter of the Los Angeles landscape, but in recent years his art has taken a new direction. In his own words: "I would like my work to go to a very free place where things are not limited by unnecessary rules". He takes his subjects from history and tries to free them by the act of painting. For instance, he will take an ancient bust and by removing all the qualifications required of art at the time, he tries to capture its essence on canvas. He looks for what he finds to be the most powerfull motive in a historical piece, and tries to express it on its own. Literally liberating it from the rules to wich it was once bound.
Broek searches for the human metaphors in our collective cultural production. Always aware of the inherent dynamic and movement of a picture, he paints themes of exitement and high drama. Through this filtering proces he tries to achieve a more direct experience, he wants to feel, and make us feel, what is hidden in the imagery of the past. By combining modern morals with ancient stories he revives the intent with wich the old masters presumably made their pieces.
