Born 1974, Cuba
Liset Castillo creates metaphorical
artworks in different disciplines that are precisely and expertly
executed. Using sand and powder pigment in her sculptures and
paintings, she explores the connection between humans and the sea,
and illuminates the topic of the ongoing migration from Cuba to the
United States. While the bright colours of her works visualise the
immigrants’ hope for a better future, the fragile nature of the
sand and floating water-inspired shapes draw attention to the
precariousness of immigrant life.
Liset Castillo grew up in Cuba, earning a Master’s degree in Fine
Arts in 1998 at Havana’s Higher Institute of Art (ISA). She first
came to Amsterdam in 2002 when she was invited to participate in the
International Artists Program “de Ateliers.” Castillo currently lives and works in the Netherlands and Spain. Her works have been exhibited worldwide.
