In April TORCH gallery Amsterdam will open with a solo-exhibition of new work by Dutch digital artist Eelco brand. On Saturday the 6th of April a special video-projection will be presented as an introduction to the exhibition. This 35mm film screening will be exhibited for one week, until the official opening on Saturday the 20th of April. The official opening will include new animations, prints and a video-installation featuring steel sculptures.



Brand started his artistic career as a painter but has been working solely with computers for several years now. The make-believe worlds he creates are rendered with an unbelievable amount of detail. Every branch, leaf and ray of sunlight is carefully placed by Brand in his role of creator of private universes. All of his pieces are made without the use of any video- or photo-references and are consequently build up from scratch using 3D-software.


In recent years the emphasis of Brand's oeuvre has been placed on his digital animations. In these wondrous films, without a beginning or an end, Brand demonstrates the powers of his new medium. In his eyes 3D-animation is a tool which offers (particularly to artists) the opportunity of visualizing one's imagination without any physical borders. In Brand's pieces unnatural shapes bounce in the forest, pieces of fruit melt into flesh-like pouches, berries are blown as if they were glass and a tree turns itself around like it was made of elastics.


In Brand animaties & prints + object the artist presents a new approach to his work. For several of his animations he has transferred the digital source to an analogue medium. For example, his most recent work has been converted into a 35mm Film; a century old standard for the highest quality of film in cinemas worldwide, but now quickly surpassed by the rapid developments in digital video. The now nostalgic qualities of the medium - the darkened room with a contently rattling projector and the dust and scratches on the screen - have a surprising consequence for the digital image. The technical perfection of a computer-generated image is effectively materialized into a more earthly form of appearance which enhances the trust in what is seen.


An approach closely connected to this process of materialization is his latest video-installation. In an animation two bright-blue shapes resembling mercury continuously melt together and then separate. In front of the video-screens the two main 'actors' of the work are presented; two large steel balls with a bright-blue coating perfectly matching the colours seen on the screen. The piece delivers an intriguing interaction between image and matter, and between motion and a fixed position. Furthermore, this work can be seen as an a try-out for a monumental sculptural project to be erected in South-Korea, which will feature several comparable sculptures set in a park between skyscrapers.
