Boarding starts from 17:00 at gate D12. In the meantime, enjoy our assortment of snacks while you wait in our departure lounge. Thank you for flying TORCH Airlines x Casper Braat.
At every airport around the world, similar aesthetics ensure a safe and efficient experience for the traveller. Air travel has become a homogenised experience shaped by an industry that aims to create a feeling of luxury at the lowest cost. With Departures, Casper Braat recreates this timeless place that is simultaneously everywhere and nowhere. In his installation, the visitor is a passenger waiting in limbo, who can help themselves to everyday conveniences sculpted from Carrara marble.
Schiphol, Heathrow, Charles de Gaulle, Malpensa, Adolfo Suárez, Tegel. Over a 10-day period, Casper Braat waited in the passenger terminals of these airports, which can be regarded as symbols of our globalised culture. As an in-between location rather than a destination, the airport terminal is an environment where passengers from anywhere in the world temporarily coexist. A utopian vision of safety and togetherness meets a dystopian reality of control and depersonalisation. This insulated universe is reality until boarding begins. While waiting, time flattens, and there is no sense of the present.
Part of the exhibition is Waiting in Limbo (2022), a 12-hour single-shot film that follows a subject waiting on an airport bench. He never leaves the frame, going nowhere and waiting for nothing. The viewer experiences the same boredom while watching the film from an airport bench.
About the artist
Casper Braat (NL, 1991) is a visual artist based in Amsterdam. His work presents the everyday as pure extravagance – a perspective that is driven by his profound fascination with consumer society. Forever, Casper's sold-out first exhibition at TORCH in 2020, presented home appliances transformed into timeless marble sculptures.
Departures was made possible thanks to generous funding by Mondriaan Fonds.
