Amsterdam Art Week: 17 - 27 June. Artist Talk Thijs Zweers: Sunday 20 June, 14.00-15.00. Reservations: [email protected]
TORCH Gallery presents 2 simultaneous exhibitions by Monty Richthofen and Thijs Zweers, both featuring site-specific installations that were constructed in the days before opening the show. In the front space, Thijs Zweers (1986, NL) presents his installation as well as a new series of works that combine charcoal with neon lights.
Zweers examines the boundaries between our world and the virtual one. Out of Element, the installation he creates specifically for his exhibition at TORCH, is a collage of artificially simulated natural elements. Light, matter, movement and time represent the building blocks of a new reality that is shaped by online mass media, which are an increasing influence on our daily lives. At the same time the installation is a dissection of his artworks: all elements are taken apart to be studied independently.
Zweers also shows the brand-new Siren Song series, smaller and intensified works that can be regarded as a distillate of his previous Dance Dance Revolution project. The artist turns digitally designed sceneries into charcoal and chalk drawings, after which he adds neon. Electronics and traditional techniques intertwine, enforcing the idea that we are looking at a digital image.
Zweers recently released A World Apart, a completely digital artwork with which he takes a next step in embracing the virtual world.
